The Zuiderzee

The Verveners won the peat in strips. Where the peat disappeared, water came in its place and so "draft holes" were created. In between, land was saved: "keeping out" and the peat was laid to dry. By further dyeing, storms and floods from the time of the Zuiderzee, "weeding" arose, large stretches of open water through which the area became so famous.
